Measure the width of the window. To determine the necessary length, divide the window length by five, and then add that number to the length of the window and add seam allowances. Cut the fabric and lining according to the measurements. Pin the fabrics with right sides together and trace/ cut scallops along the bottom. Sew the two pieces together after leaving about a six-inch opening along the top in the middle for turning. Snip small cuts in the seam allowances along the scallops so they lie flat, and then turn the shade right side out. Iron the edges till they are crisp and sew the opening shut.
A Wooden Outdoor Rocking Chair
Some people just toss out old patio furniture, but not you. You’re the kind of handyman (or woman) who knows how to get the most mileage out of a piece of furniture. An outdoor rocking chair can be a cherished piece passed down through the generations. Keep yours looking like the day you bought it with some repair tips.
Problem #1: Uneven or discolored finish
To repair the aesthetic portion of your outdoor rocking chair, you will first need to strip away any visible traces of an existing finish. You can use a finish stripper or just sandpaper. You can also use a putty knife to get off any especially thick spots, but be careful not to nick the wood. Once the surface is smooth and free of varnish, clean off all surfaces to ensure that the finish sticks better. Then, you can apply one to two coats of a finish of your choice, an oil-based varnish or paint, for example.
Problem #2: Damaged spindles
One feature found on many a wooden outdoor rocking chair is spindles. These are the rod-shaped pieces of wood that make up the backrest and sometimes hold up the armrests as well. The problem is that these can often be quite thin and delicate and prone to breaking.
Problem #3: Mold, stains and discoloration
If the finish is not a problem, but the wood itself has become discolored from black mold or some other stain, you can do one of two things: you can either cover and hide the stain, or try and remove it. To hide the stain, clean the wood off using soap and water and then apply a coat of an opaque or stain-hiding primer. Then you can choose whatever color to paint your outdoor rocking chair once the primer is completely dry.
Garden Vacation for Houseplants
A deck or patio can be a great place to give your houseplants a summer holiday. Just like us, they get an extra bit of energy with a change of scenery and are the great shape to return to their natural indoor habitat when the weather turns. The plants enjoy their new surrounds and make super additions to groups of garden pots and containers. Everyone responds to the warmth, fresh air, rainfall and of course sunshine by giving off new growth and vitality come Fall.
There is a system to moving indoor plants outside. It is imperative that they are moved gradually so that they don’t go into shock and become accustomed to the very different conditions over time. Just like seedlings, they need to be hardened off. Start to place the planters and pots outdoors once the weather has warmed up and any danger of frost is over. Firstly, set the pots in a protected, shady area - even the cacti and succulents which love the sun. If you start with the planters in the full sun, they will scorch - even though they have been in a south facing window all winter. Gradually expose them to more and more sun over the course of a week or two. Check every day to see that the soil is moist and there are no scorch marks on any of the leaves.
By early summer, they should be fully incorporated in the garden. Each houseplant has its own place among the many containers of annuals and perennials. They add a new dimension to the deck and patio and can even be placed in the garden landscape to add a definite focal point to the area. It is so easy to move flower pots and containers around, try to find spots where they will receive the morning sun and afternoon shade, away from the direct hot sunrays of the late afternoon. If you have shade loving houseplants and ferns, be sure to keep them protected all summer - they just cannot tolerate full sun even if acclimatized gradually.
Cost effective home decoration
People looking to re decorate and rejuvenate their home are generally deterred by the cost involved in the process. Most households have the intent, but lack the monetary resource to buy expensive items like carpets & rugs, flooring, curtains, chairs, tables, beds, etc to decorate their home. What they need is a home decor plan which can fulfill all their requirements and still stay within their budget.
As a bargain hunter, it is important to be constantly on the lookout for any new scheme or discount offered by home decor shops. Offers like exchange schemes, free fitting of laminate flooring, etc are very helpful in reducing the total cost incurred in the home decor process. Seasonal discounts are also offered by these stores on items like carpets & rugs, chairs, sofas, etc.
In case the bedroom has carpet flooring, those carpets can also be put to alternate uses. Instead of purchasing a new rug, the section of carpet under the beds can be cut to create a new rug. This would save on purchasing a new rug. Thus we can see that carpets & rugs can be put to alternate uses, apart from their conventional ones, to create a unique and aesthetic home decor.
These were some of the tips which can be followed to effectively decorate a house and that too at a reasonable cost. But there is no limit to the creativity of a human mind. Thinking along these lines, it is possible to come up with lots of new innovations and methods to create a cost effective home decor.
